Police in Manipur state said they have started a case for gang rape and kidnapping and will make arrests shortly, more than two months after three women were paraded naked by mobs. It was one of the first documented incidences of sexual violence in the state following the May 3 confrontations, and authorities are investigating.
On Wednesday, video footage of the event surfaced on social media. According to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), the perpetrator’s decision to disseminate the footage on social media exacerbated the woman’s suffering by exposing the victim. Two of the women are visible in the video.
The assault allegedly occurred on May 4 in Nongpok Sekmai, Thoubal district, while the three women were attempting to flee violent mobs attacking villages in Kampoppi area. According to police sources, the Kangpokpi Police Station registered zero Initial Information Report (FIR) on May 18, which has now been forwarded to Thoubal, the place of the crime. Regardless of police jurisdiction or territorial authority, an invalid FIR will be registered.
According to the FIR, one of the women was raped. According to a complaint made by the village head, the rape survivor’s father and brother were killed by the crowd. According to the complaint, the 19-year-old brother was killed while attempting to shield his sister from the crowd. Murder charges are also pending.
According to the FIR, five people, including three women, escaped into the forest afraid for their life before being rescued by police. According to the FIR, approximately 900 to 1,000 rioters, some armed with advanced weaponry, blocked the police line and kidnapped five people in police custody.
FIR Zero was turned over to Tubal police on June 21. Although it has been more than a month since the regular FIR registration, no arrests have been made.
Manipur Police said in a statement, “Abduction, gang-rape, and murder against unknown armed offenders, which went viral on May 4, in which two women were shown nude by unidentified armed offenders, has been filed and investigated.” State police are working tirelessly to apprehend the culprits as soon as possible.
After a women’s group planned a protest march, the state administration imposed an indefinite curfew in five valley districts on Wednesday: Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakachin, and Tubal.
Hoihnu Hauzel, a Manipuri journalist, tweeted: “These women were paraded naked in public, fondled and beaten.” A horrific video of the criminals was published and quickly went viral today. At every level, mankind is being destroyed.”
