The transformation of One Piece from a commonplace Paramecia-type to a mythical Zoan fruit took over two decades. In this week’s episode, Luffy’s Gear 5 makes its official debut, and it’s fair to say that the anime adaptation has far exceeded fan expectations.
Before transforming, Luffy suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the CP0 agent’s ambush attack. His defeat destroyed the morale of the entire alliance and of every person in Wano.
However, just as it appears that all hope has been lost, Luffy awakens his devil fruit powers and prepares to destroy Kaido. In their final confrontation, the juvenile pirate defeats the Yonko with relative ease. Learn more about Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece by delving deeper.
Luffy’s devil fruit serves predominantly as Gomu Gomu no Mi, a type of paramecia that transforms him into a rubber man. The user is able to expand and contract their bodies as if they were made of rubber. In addition, they are immune to lightning-based assaults because their bodies function as insulators.
Luffy’s adaptability and inventiveness enable him to augment his abilities with Gear 2 and Gear 3. When he reaches Gear 4, he combines his Haki with his demon fruit to deal devastating damage to his foes.
In addition, Luffy is vulnerable to many physical assaults unless they are imbued with a unique Haki or technique. This is why the Straw Hats are startled when Jinbe uses his Fish-Man Karate to harm Luffy.
